Overview

Prerequisites

  1. Good knowledge of AWS service
    • Elastic Compute (EC2)
    • Elastic Load Balancer
  2. Laptop/Desktop
  3. Internet Browser
  4. Internet connection

Challenge Instructions

  1. Region : Make sure to use us-east-1 region to create all the resources.
  2. You will be provided with the requirements of the challenge. If you are new to AWS Cloud, we recommend you go through our hands-on Labs before taking this challenge.
  3. Challenge Duration: 60 minutes

How to submit the challenge

  1. After building the infrastructure, click on the Validation button, to validate if you have built the required infrastructure and completed the challenge successfully.
  2. Validation status:
    • Success - You have completed the challenge successfully.
    • Failed - You have failed to complete the challenge.
  3. Once you have successfully validated the challenge, click on End Lab button to end the challenge.

Launching Challenge Environment

  1. To launch the challenge environment, Click on the Start Challenge button.
  2. Please wait until the cloud environment is provisioned. It will take less than a minute to provision.
  3. Once the Challenge is started, you will be provided with IAM user name, Password, Access Key, and Secret Access Key.
Note : You can only start one challenge at any given time.

Lab guide

Sign in to AWS Management Console

  1. Click on the Open Console button, and you will get redirected to AWS Console in a new browser tab.
  2. On the AWS sign-in page, Leave the Account ID as default. Never edit/remove the 12 digit Account ID present in the AWS Console. otherwise, you cannot proceed with the challenge.
  3. Now copy your User Name and Password in the Lab Console to the IAM Username and Password in AWS Console and click on the Sign in button.

Cloud Challenge Details

In this challenge, your AWS compute skills are put to the test. You’ll be given a requirement, and you have to reach it using your knowledge.

Architecture Diagram

A company, XYZ wants to build their Website in AWS Console with EC2 Instance Contents using, Apache HTTP Server Scripts. The website should be highly available in case of any server failures. Below are the tasks you have to perform to create the Load balancer and EC2 instances.
  1. Launch 2 EC2 Instances Instance 1 and Instance 2, type as t2.micro with SSH, HTTP, HTTPS.
  2. Advanced details and under the User data: section, Enter the script to create an HTML page served by an Apache httpd web server, create a custom html page as below:
    • Instance 1 webpage should display:  Welcome to IP Lab Portal Server 1
    • Instance 2 webpage should display:  Welcome to IP Lab Portal Server 2
  3. Create Target group with both EC2 instance including.
  4. Create Application Load balancer, map all the Availability zones, map the created target group.
  5. Test the Elastic Load Balancer DNS.
  6. To check the traffic on the ec2 load balancer, Stop the Instance 1, now the traffic should shift to Instance 2.
  7. After Validation Terminate all the resources.

Delete AWS Resources

Deleting Load balancer

  1. In the EC2 console, navigate to Load Balancers in the left-side panel.
  2. Your Load Balancer will be listed there.
  3. To delete the load balancer, you need to perform the following actions:
    • Select the load balancer,
    • Click on the Actions button,
    • Select the Delete option.
  4. Confirm by typing confirm when a pop-up is shown. Click on Delete button.
  5. Web-server-LG will be deleted immediately.

Deleting Target groups

  1. In the EC2 console, navigate to Target groups in the left-side panel.
  2. To delete the target group, you need to perform the following actions:
    • Click on the Actions button,
    • Select the Delete option.
  3. Confirm by clicking on the Yes, delete button when a pop-up is shown.

Deleting EC2 Instances

  1. In the EC2 console, navigate to Instances in the left-side panel.
  2. To terminate the EC2 Instances, need to perform the following actions:
    • Select the EC2 instance
    • Click on the Instance state button,
    • Select the Terminate instance option
  3. Confirm by clicking on the Terminate button when a pop-up is shown.
  4. EC2 Instances will be terminated immediately.

End Challenge

  1. Sign out of the AWS Account.
  2. You have Successfully completed the challenge.
  3. Click on the End Challenge button from IP Lab Portal Labs console and wait till the process gets complete

What gets checked

When you press Check my work, the platform verifies each of these:
  • Launch an EC2 Instance — Check whether an EC2 Instance is launched or not.
  • Launch EC2 AMI type Amazon Linux — Check whether the EC2 instance is launched using an Amazon AMI.
  • Create a Application Load Balancer — Check if given type of Load Balancer is created or not.
  • Create ELB Target Group — Check if given type of Load Balancer is created or not.
  • Invoke Load Balancer DNS — Check whether the Elastic Load Balancer DNS URL is accessible from the internet or not.
